There was a short time early in its life when that forum was pretty reasonable. That was back when I was responsible for like a quarter of the posts. But that was a long, long time ago. Perhaps as long as 10 years now.

The poster has indicated (although not perhaps as clearly as he should have) that the rest of the post was done by someone else in his name after he accidentally left himself logged in on a public machine.

TLCnet is no more, true enough. But it was pure economics. I think I can present the basic facts here- at least of the final days- without too much error since my website was the last one to be hosted on TLCnet.

As a hobby / home business, Yoda ran a community ISP and webhosting service in San Diego, California called TLCnet. This was back when everybody used dialup and there were very few ISPs and they could charge good prices compared to their costs. Being a BB fan, he opened his business to hosting BB sites using the bandwidth he already was leasing for his community access ISP. His business model was to charge a percentage of the gross from the websites that used his hosting service rather than any kind of fixed fee. At one point there were quite a few- Velvet Kick and Vulneraballs and Aussie Ballbusting (bustyournuts) and Russian BB and many others- many long gone, but many still around in various forms. He hosted so many because at the time, choices for web hosts who would accept BB content were limited and with his business model it was easy for a website to start up with only a few ground-floor subscribers. Unfortunately as the webhosting choices become much greater and cheaper, people started using and expecting broadband access, and competition for the BB dollar became much stiffer, his costs went up, his market share dwindled and he no longer made a profit. In addition, state of the art in webhosting demanded virtually 100% uptime and ever more powerful servers to remain competitive. In reality there was no way he could provide the new hardware or the maintenance while running the business as a "hobby". The handwriting was on the wall at that point.

The US government passed new laws via 18 U.S.C. 2257 and associated regulations found in 28 C.F.R 75 that made it potentially very difficult for non-US "porn" websites to be legally hosted on US servers, so he dropped the international business- although truth be told, the revenue was probably not paying for the bandwidth at that point anyway. Within a year, coincident with the end of his bandwidth leasing period, he did not renew his lease, but instead he dropped his two remaining sites (Velvet Kick and Cali Mean Girls) and got out of the business, simply because he was paying more to lease the bandwidth from his upstream provider than he was taking in from BB site revenue. At the same time, Yoda moved his residence to an area that did not have broadband service. He took that opportunity to pass the reins of the TLCnet "dBabble" forum (including the aging server hardware that hosted it) to a couple of other individuals who had the bandwidth and time to take it on.
