yes they can. my wife has inserted several needles and ive since gotten her pregnant.

Needles in or thru the balls isn't a big deal. You should use small gauge needles and observe "sterile" conditions. The occasional "needle in the nut" doesn't cause any appreciable damage - but use just the body of the ball and not the "accessory" coils and cords on the outside of the capsule. Anytime you introduce a foreign object you run a risk of infection. But, there's a risk factor in just getting out of bed in the morning:)
