    1994 -- Beijing's official Heilongjiang Legal News publication reported in January that the wife of Zhang Jingui, following the advice of a fortune-teller on how to improve marital relations, cut off his penis with a pair of scissors. The fortune-teller had concluded that the problem in the relationship was Zhang's faulty organ and that the wife's only hope was to remove it so that a new one would grow.

    1996 -- In July, a senior surgeon at Bangkok's Siriraj Hospital told reporters that Thailand was probably the pre-eminent country in the world for penis-reattachment surgery. Said Dr. Surasak Maungsombat, whose team has performed 30 such surgeries since 1978, "It seems that some Thai women just can't tolerate extramarital affairs and do this, which is different from women elsewhere who would just divorce their unfaithful husbands."

    1994 -- While the Lorena Bobbitt trial was making news during December and January, at least five instances of assaults on men's genitals were reported.
    A 55-year-old man in Wooster, Ohio, and a 23-year-old man in Arcadia, Fla., removed their own penises (with a knife and an electric saw, respectively) because of dissatisfaction with their gender.
    A Toronto woman shredded her husband's with a pair of scissors during a domestic fight.
    In Los Angeles, a man reconciled with his wife a month after she was charged with cutting off his testicles in a domestic fight.
    And in Jefferson, Ga., a 35-year-old woman was charged with ripping the skin off her ex-boyfriend's testicles with her bare hands in a domestic brawl.

    1995 -- William Townsend Jr. was awarded $20,000 by a jury in Louisville, Ky., in November because he was excessively punished while an inmate at River City Corrections Center. A guard had found contraband (two cans of Vienna sausages) in Townsend's underwear and had squeezed his testicles three times, causing a contusion and leaving him with pain long after his release from jail. According to Townsend, the guard told him at the time, "That'll teach you to bring Vienna sausages up here."

    1994 -- As of early 1994, according to the National Catholic Reporter, a machine was available to gather sperm for medical purposes that would sidestep the church's two objections to masturbation (direct stimulation of the penis and presence of erotic thoughts). Experimenting with a machine that attaches to and vibrates the testicles, researchers at the University of the Sacred Heart in Rome OKed the device for further tests and eventual commercial use.

Among the claims on the flier: "Women cause too much trouble on the buses" and "They commit ... threats of pencil puncture to eyeballs and threats of cutting off testicles" and "Cattle cars would be appropriate transportation for them."

    1996 -- To assure that she would not be disqualified in last summer's Olympic Games, Brazil's female heavyweight judo champion Edinanci Fernandes da Silva, 19, underwent surgery in May to remove partially formed testicles that were responsible for her abnormally high levels of testosterone. "I'm a normal woman," said da Silva.

    1992 -- Dong Huibo, 24, died of injuries inflicted by one of Shanghai's notoriously aggressive female bus conductors in August. The incident began when Dong took issue with the woman's description of his buttocks. She swore at him, slapped his face, and grabbed and then kicked his testicles. As he scrambled to get out a window, the driver hit the accelerator, hurling Dong to the street, where he died.

    1993 -- In December, the New Zealand High Court reduced the sentence of Rugby League player Rudi Crichton, 21, from five months in jail to three. A lower court had found him guilty of deliberately grabbing another player's testicles during a game in July, hospitalizing him for a week.
