Totally irrelevant, but I have to share this
So New York is considering banning the use of cooking oil that contains trans-fatty acids (AKA partially hydrogenated oil). Now the whole U.S.A. does not and cannot produce enough corn oil to fill the need.
30 years ago the Canadian Wheat Board realised that Canada was about to lose it's pre-dominant position as a wheat exporter, due to the "Green Revolution" that they themselves had initiated. (China, Russia, and India would soon be self sufficient), and set Scientists to find alternative crops.
Only two other crops could be grown profitably on the Canadian Praires. Mustard and Rapeseed. Within 2 years Canada was producing 95% of the World's supply of Mustard. Rapeseed is an oil-plant, its high smoking point oil made it ideal for industrial lubrication. The oil was also edible, very healthy, but due to the presense of Racinic Acid, it tasted rancid. Industrial removal of this acid made the cooking oil a bit more expensive than corn oil. Production was subsidised by the Canadian Government for a few years, untill, by selective breeding and a bit of Genetic manipulation a low acid content seed was finally produced, cheaper and healthier than corn oil. This Canadian Oil, Low Acid is now our third biggest export to the U.S.A. (after wood and petroleum (by the way, Canada, not Saudi Arabia is USA's biggest energy supplier)).
If the New York Bill passes our exports to USA of Canola oil will increase by an estimated 3 Billion dollars a year. Even if the Americans grow their own Canola, our license fees would amount to almost the same amount.
America no longer has the Know-How or infrastructure to develop an alternative, thanks to the Bush admistration's ********** of the Department of the Interior, and the Department of Agriculture.
I Luv NY
