The bonger isn't as threatening as it sounds (though repeated bashes will definitely make you regret it)--it feels like, and might actually be, a racquetball on a plastic handle. You can hit yourself pretty much anywhere else as hard as you like and it won't hurt too much; I think it's originally intended to loosen up muscles.
