That's a movie comedy cliche that annoys me. Girl kicks guy pain. Guy kicks girl, confusion. Weird look on both their faces.

I don't think I've ever heard a laugh in a theater. Like what? "HAHAHA! He tried to kick her in the balls but she doesn't have any!" No one ever laughs at it and it makes no sense, so why is it a comedy staple?

I have to assume because of a male dominated writing team. But it doesn't explain why they go to a formula that doesn't work.
